December SJCC & Div I NAC Recap, Day 1: Fencing Stars Shine Bright on Day One of Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. -  The first day of the December SJCC and Division I North American Cup brought out so much talent as four medals were awarded on day one.

Two of the medals included 2024 Olympic hopefuls Elizabeth Tartakovsky (Manhattan Fencing Center) and Gerek Meinhardt OLY (Massialas Foundation (M Team) / Bluegrass Fencers' Club).

Even with an early start, Tartakovsky jumped right in bringing all the energy to the strip. She kept things the same, keeping a normal routine for competitions, “I woke up at 5:30 a.m., I mean I wanted to do the same routine I do before every competition.”

For Tartakovsky this medal is a back-to-back NAC win for her. “It’s really special, coming off a win there’s a little bit more pressure to repeat the same tournament, so I had that in the back of my mind, but I mostly treated today as practice for the world cups.”

Meinhardt came out of the October NAC with a silver medal and then today took gold. He said “It felt great, obviously second place is still a great result, but going into the gold medal match I really wanted to get that gold, so I am happy I was able to pull out those last couple of touches at the end.”

Nathan Kim (Swords Fencing Studio) was feeling “really good” about bringing home a gold medal. He talked about being first out of pools and how he “prepared for DE’s, I took it one at a time, focused on each bout, each touch, and I just came out on top!”
