Day three of the December SJCC & Division I NAC brought out loud crowds cheering on fencers throughout their day of fencing.

RICHMOND, Va. -  The third day of the December SJCC and Division I North American Cup brought out all the excitement as fencers had loud crowds cheering them on through their entire day.

Kicking the day off with quite the fan club was Josephine S. Chang (Fencing Academy Of Westchester) who took home the gold medal in Junior Women’s Saber.  Chang talked about how all the cheering for her “never hurts.” She said “I usually tune out most sounds that are going on, but it never hurts. I feel like it kind of brings you back to a collegiate environment, which definitely helps me.”

Chang’s fan club was full of her college teammates, roommates, coaches from school and from home. Some of them were even cheering Chang on as she filmed her Instagram interview on the USA Fencing channel!

Daniel Holz (Premier Fencing Academy) had to fence against his very own brother to earn a spot in the gold medal match for the Junior Men’s Saber event. While the stakes were high, he said “My brother was definitely my toughest competitor today. He pushes me not only in training, but also in the tournament, obviously. Back home when we train, he’s definitely the person who pushes me the most in my training, and without him I would definitely not be where I am today.”

Allison Chen (Gutkovskiy Fencing Academy) won gold in the Junior Women’s Foil event and was feeling “pretty happy” with her result. After a long day, she relied on her friends and coaches supporting her among other things to keep going, “I just bent my knees lower, and I thought ‘Oh I am going to lock in with this’, and my coach and friends supporting me, that motivated me.”

When she realized she had gotten the final touch to win gold all that went through her head was “Wow. That was a nice parry riposte.”
