Remarkable talent and unwavering passion, fencers continue to shine.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -  As day three of the January NAC 2024 ends, the energy and excitement remain at its peak. Day three of fencing witnessed incredible bouts, remarkable sportsmanship, and the crowning of champions.

Julie Seal (Valkyrie Fencing Club) earned gold in the Vet-50 Women’s Saber event and earned the Vet-50 Fencer of the Year Award at the Veteran Awards dinner on Saturday night. “Coming off of last season, it was such a high, both World Championships, then I took a little break, and then you always wonder if you can do the same thing that you just did, how many times you can do it over and over again. I had a little bit rougher of a time yesterday with foil, so I’m really happy to be back on the top of the podium today,” said Seal.

Seal competed two days in a row, but in different weapons. Going from foil to saber, Seal said “For saber I have to be more emotionally aggressive. It’s an interesting dynamic because physically you have to compress a lot of your physical spaces and then at the right moment use everything, your whole push, whereas in foil it can be a little bit more gradual both ways. You can take a little more time to be tactical where in saber you don’t have the opportunity, you don’t have that mental space. You really need to be ready to make that decision right away and that involves being ready to just go get the touch.”

Davis Carvey (Rain City Fencing Center / Salle Auriol Seattle), the Vet-80 Men’s Foil gold medalist, said “it feels great” about kicking off the new year with a gold medal. He continues to come back to NAC’s to fence because he has “met so many wonderful people, it’s a positive supportive environment for people of all ages.”

Jeannine Bender (Capital Fencing Academy), the Vet-70 Women’s Saber gold medalist said, “This is great! It’s a great way to start the year!” Bender was simply amazed when she realized she had scored the final touch to secure gold. She said “I had a hard time believing I won the bout. The reason is, my very good friend, Jane Eyre and I, have been in many gold medal bouts together. In women’s saber, you fence the same people a lot. I really enjoy fencing with Jane Eyre, she’s a wonderful fencer. So, I just felt good that today was my day.”

Junior Women’s Foil gold medalist, Chin-Yi Kong (Golden State Fencing Academy) had a great advantage of fencing in her own backyard for her event. Talking about having her teammates cheer her on, and being able to fence with that support Kong said “It was really great. It was definitely because people could just drive down, it was super easy, and I felt very supported.”

Chris O'Loughlin (New York Athletic Club) topped the podium a second time this weekend as he claimed the gold medal in the Veteran Men’s Epee event. On winning two gold medals “it’s twice as good!” When he realized that he had won a second gold medal on the weekend, he said “it was a relief. I had been in the situation before where I won the 50’s and then was in the finals and lost. That’s happened a few times. So, I was trying to be positive, I want this to be two golds.”
