Men’s Foil becomes the first fencing squad to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, with their spot solidified after their gold medal triumph at the recent Paris World Cup.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — What happened in Paris … leads back to Paris.

USA Fencing is thrilled to announce that the Team USA Men's Foil squad has officially qualified for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Men’s Foil becomes the first Team USA fencing squad to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, with their spot solidified after their gold medal triumph at the recent Paris World Cup. That win mathematically clinches a position in the top four of the global Men’s Foil rankings.

The road to Olympic qualification has been marked by a series of outstanding performances from Team USA Men’s Foil. The journey began with a gold medal at the Acapulco World Cup in May 2023, followed by another gold at the Zonal Championships in Lima in June 2023. The team continued to showcase their prowess with a fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Milan in July 2023, culminating in the gold medal in Paris this January.

The top four teams globally, based on point totals accumulated in the qualification window, earn the privilege of sending a full squad to the Olympics. Team USA, currently among this elite group alongside Japan, Italy, and France, will join the highest qualifiers from each zone outside the top four. Right now that’s China (Asia-Oceania), Egypt (Africa), Poland (Europe) and Canada (Americas).

Team USA's full Men's Foil squad for Paris will include three fencers who compete in both the individual and team events, plus a fourth "replacement athlete" who may be used in the team event.

While our Men’s Foil team’s presence in Paris is now guaranteed, the exact composition of the 3+1 athletes remains to be determined. Selection points are still up for grabs at the upcoming USA Fencing April NAC/Division I Championships in Salt Lake City, as well as FIE World Cup and Grand Prix tournaments. That will keep the anticipation high as we approach the Olympics.

Phil Andrews, USA Fencing CEO, shares his excitement.

“Qualifying for the Paris Olympics is a testament to the dedication, skill and relentless spirit of our Men's Foil team,” he says. “Their journey to this point has been nothing short of inspirational. We are incredibly proud and look forward to seeing them shine on the world's greatest sporting stage.”

With Men’s Foil locked in, attention will turn to our other talented squads. As of this writing, Team USA sits in qualifying position in four other weapons: Women’s Foil, Women’s Saber, Women’s Epee and Men’s Saber.
