Updates have been made to the USA Fencing SafeSport Policy, effective Sept. 21, 2017.

The updated policy clarifies which the individuals to whom the SafeSport Policy applies.

The updated policy also reinforces that the SafeSport policy applies to all individuals who have frequent contact with athletes and participants of any age, including those both over and under 18.

Due to the USA Fencing membership structure change in which the “Professional” category has been removed as of the 2017-18 season, the updated policy also clarifies that individuals who require a background screen as outlined in the SafeSport policy must do so by registering for one of the following USA Fencing membership categories: Coach (formerly Professional), +Coach Upgrade or +CheckEd (formerly +Professional).

As a reminder, the online SafeSport course that is required for USA Fencing Coach and +CheckEd members will be undergoing some changes in the upcoming months.

The SafeSport Course will transition to a new learning management system (LMS) beginning in November. The current LMS and SafeSport online courses at https://training.teamusa.org (Team USA Prep Center) will be shut down on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 to allow for user data migration to the new SafeSport platform at https://safesport.org. The new SafeSport training course will be accessible on Monday, Nov. 6.

As a result, please be prepared and complete any needed SafeSport training before November 1 as the course will be unavailable during this five-day period.

Additionally, effective Nov. 6, the new SafeSport online training at https://safesport.org will consist of three new courses. Each course is approximately 30 minutes and will be replacing the original 90-minute SafeSport course.

All Coach and +CheckEd Members will need to complete all three courses after the expiration date of their current training certification. The training will continue to be valid for two years.

The three new courses will address the following subjects:

  1. Sexual Misconduct Awareness Education
  2. Reporting Child Sexual Abuse
  3. Emotional and Physical Misconduct
