(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Sixty-seven athletes between ages 50 and 80 will represent Team USA at the Veteran World Championships from Oct. 16-21 in Maribor, Slovenia.
The American squad will attempt to better its record haul of 20 Veteran World medals set at the last Veteran World Championships when Team USA takes the strip on Monday.
The U.S. team will return 34 members of the 2016 Veteran World Team, including 17 men and 17 women.
Among the athletes to watch are a full dozen past individual Veteran World Champions, including three pairs of events in which Team USA has multiple World Champions going for another chance at gold):
Team USA includes several first-timers to the Veteran World Championships who hold past experience as senior elite fencers.
Leslie Marx (Durham, N.C.) is one such fencer who will make her return to the stage after an athletic career that included fencing at the 1996 Olympic Games. The 50-year-old epee fencer has been nearly unbeatable in U.S. competition, winning seven of the eight veteran epee national events in which she has competed.
A 1992 Olympian, Jon Normile (Millburn, N.J.) also will be making his Vet World debut. The 50-year-old epeeist made his debut at the Veteran Nationals in July where he fifth.
