Job Description:

Work in Portland, OR at one of the premier sabre programs in the U.S. OFA boasts 64 World & Olympic Championship Medals: 32 GOLD----16 SILVER----16 BRONZE. Join the OFA staff and Head Coach Ed Korfanty, four time US Olympic coach and Head Coach of the USA Women’s sabre team.
Review our webpage at for our programs, philosophy and staff. The OFA facility is located at the Sports and Recreation Center of Oregon Episcopal School with 12 strips, lockers, showers and multimedia for video training.


Work primarily in youth development programs ages 7-18. Deliver private lessons systematically and consistently. Measure and evaluate tournament performance and adjust students’ instruction as needed. Follow and apply best practices for physical conditioning and training. Be supportive of the club philosophy and work together as a team to applying our successful program for physical conditioning, technical and tactical training. You will give individual lessons along with reinforcing instruction in group classes, fencing fitness training, strip coaching, and coaching in local, regional and national competitions. Currently we have classes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday afternoons 3-8 PM and Saturday 9-1 PM.


We are looking for a candidate transitioning from competition to coaching with a positive caring attitude that enjoys working with kids. A candidate with competitive fencing experience along with domestic and international is preferred. Must be comfortable working with a cooperative team focused on the betterment of each student and sustainability of the club.

  • Passion and love for the sport
  • Eight years of sabre competitive experience
  • Must have a methodology of teaching and theory of fencing that can be adaptable with the OFA system and philosophy
  • Have a desire to work with students, primarily youth aged
  • Enthusiastic, patient, organized, mature, and dependable
  • Ability to communicate effectively with student fencers and parents to share progress and establish realistic expectations and achievement in a respectful manner
  • Must be adaptable to changes in FIE & USFA rules, directors, technique, fencers
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English
  • Safe Sport Certified

Additional Information:

We are not a "strip club" where you come to give lessons and leave. Coaches work specified days from 3 to 6 hours per day. Coaches here demonstrate a willingness to learn and become better at their craft by attending tournaments, seminars, obtaining certifications and constantly improving in this ever-changing sport.
