Job Description: Assistant Fencing Coach

The Assistant Fencing Coach reports to the Head Fencing Coach and assists in all aspects of the program. This is a full-time appointment renewable on a contract basis.

*Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Travel required.

Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies, procedures, and directives, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.


  • Assist the Head Coach in coaching and training the fencing team.
  • Assist with the development and execution of practice.
  • Assist with film breakdown and analysis.
  • Assist with coaching fencers during competitions.
  • Coordinate logistics (transportation, lodging, meals, etc.) for away competitions.
  • Assist in developing and enhancing the program both competitively and culturally through decision-making, leadership, and setting and meeting objectives.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of home meets, both USA Fencing and NCAA competitions.
  • In conjunction with the Athletic Business Office, responsible for hiring referees and arranging transportation and lodging.
  • Other home meet duties as assigned.
  • Assist with recruiting as directed by the Head Coach.
  • May include travel to local, regional, national and international competitions.
  • Assist with fund raising efforts on behalf of the fencing program, Athletic Department and University, as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Two years’ experience as a fencing coach and ability to strip coach during NCAA and USA Fencing competitions.
  • Previous experience as a strip coach for NCAA and USA Fencing competitions.
  • Ability to give high-level lessons in at least one weapon and proficiency, or willingness to achieve proficiency, in the other two weapons. A strong preference for those with saber and/or foil as primary coaching weapons.
  • Excellent and effective communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Previous experience coaching at the NCAA level preferred.
  • Valid drivers license.
