Personal: After taking up fencing at the age of nine, Aksamit won team silver at the 2008 Junior World Championships as an 18 year old. The following year, she earned a team gold and an individual bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. From 2008-12, Aksamit attended Pennsylvania State University, majoring in kinesiology. During her fencing career as a Nittany Lion, she won two NCAA Team Championships and was the runner-up NCAA Champion in 2012. A three-time All-American, Aksamit finished with a 68-14 collegiate record. When her collegiate fencing career finished in 2012, Aksamit decided to commit her next four years to becoming a member of the 2016 Olympic Team. Aksamit had the best season of her career in 2015-16 to reach No. 4 in the nation for the first time since 2009 and qualify for Team USA. A replacement athlete in Rio, Aksamit did not fence in the individual event, but helped the U.S. Women’s Saber Team win its second bronze medal in Olympic history.
