Frequently Asked Questions: New Points and Events Structure

How often are Unified points updated?

Points are normally updated within five business days after each national or international event. The Elite and Challenger split is set from the Unified list 15 days before the event, so results processed after that date don't change the fields for that event.

Do Challenger results count toward the Legacy lists?

Challenger results earn Unified points. Legacy Rolling and Team points are awarded to the top 32 finishers in the Elite field.

Do results from Zonal or World Championships count?

Only designated international events earn Unified points. Check the designated international calendar for your category and weapon.

I haven't met the minimum points threshold yet. Can I register before the deadline and be approved once I'm eligible?

No. You must meet the threshold before you can register.

I'm less than a point away from the threshold. Can I petition?

Petitions are available for Championship events only: the Division I Championships, Junior Olympics, the July Challenge and Summer Nationals. There's no petition process for standard NACs.

I want to fence up to the next age category but I'm not age-eligible. How?

You must first be eligible to fence at the national level in the age category immediately below. That unlocks the next category at the local and regional level. To fence up at a national tournament, you must meet that category's minimum. See the National Tournament Eligibility page.

I'm in Challenger. Can I be moved up to Elite?

Fencers assigned to Challenger can opt in to advance to Elite if a spot opens. The latest you can be moved is 5 p.m. local time the day before your event.

How do SJCC events award points?

All fencers earn points by finishing placement, using the SJCC values in the Junior and Cadet tables. At least three fencers must compete for points to be awarded.

How do I share feedback on the new system?

This is a two-year trial with reviews built in, and we will make changes as we learn. Share feedback at https://airtable.com/appAn0O4fg39xtN9Y/pagpmUw9TMkXp57GQ/form or email information@usafencing.org.
