Wheelchair Fencing Referee and Classification Seminars at Nationals in Salt Lake City

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – In conjunction with the Division I/Wheelchair National Championships in Salt Lake City April 12-15, USA Fencing will be launching several programs to grow the sport of wheelchair fencing.

IWAS Referee Seminar and Exam

From April 12-14, IWAS Referee Commission Chair Jon Moss will be leading the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing Referee Seminar and Examinations.  This seminar and subsequent exams are the first step to officiating wheelchair fencing at the international level. 

The seminar will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 with the written exam taking place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13.  Both the seminar and testing will take place in Room 251E of the Salt Palace Convention Center. The practical exams for each weapon will take place during the wheelchair competition sessions. Domestic Referee Seminar

For those referees who are interested in learning and beginning to referee on the domestic side of the wheelchair program, Sean Shumate will be holding a domestic seminar on Saturday, April 13 from 7-9 p.m. in room 251F. 

IWAS Classification Certification

There also will be an IWAS classification course and examination held in Salt Lake City.  This course is for those in the medical field who are interested in classifying wheelchair fencing athletes into international competition and into the A, B and C categories (more information on wheelchair classifications can be found here).

To be eligible for this course, you must be a certified health professional (i.e., physiotherapists, medical practitioners, persons with sports science or medical/biological degrees). Individuals with a technical knowledge of the sport who are no longer involved in an international level with a National Team, such as coaches or retired international athletes, also are eligible for the course.

Wheelchair Fencing Coaching Clinic

USA Fencing’s first wheelchair coaching clinic will take place Thursday, April 11 at the Salt Lake City Convention Center. Clubs interested in starting a wheelchair fencing program or looking to take their program to the next level are invited to attend. Taking place from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Room 251A, the clinic is free to all attendees.
