USA Fencing Recognizes Athletes Who Earned Ratings in April

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - More than 700 athletes from 308 clubs earned USA Fencing ratings during the month of April, with 311 epee, 271 foil and 155 saber ratings being awarded.

Fencers Club remains at the top of the club standings with 83 ratings awarded in the 2018-19 season. Athletes from Denver Fencing Center earned 14 ratings in April to move up from No. 3 to No. 2 with 61 total, edging Alliance Fencing Academy's 60. 

Nearly 200 ratings were awarded at the Division I National Championships and April North American Cup in Salt Lake City. Among these were three fencers who upgraded from a B rating to an A rating at the NAC. Sharrie Zafft (Worthington, Mass.) and Chris Matt (Fairfax Station, Va.) earned As with gold medal wins in the veteran 50-59 women’s epee and 50-59 men’s saber events, respectively. Markus Lang (Wake Forest, N.C.) earned his A with a fifth place finish in the veteran open men’s epee competition.

Six members of the 2019 Senior World Team not only secured their positions on Team USA in Salt Lake, but also renewed their A ratings at the Division I Nationals:

  • Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore. / Women’s Saber)
  • Kat Holmes (Washington, D.C. / Women’s Epee)
  • Kasia Nixon (Los Angeles, Calif. / Women’s Epee)
  • Jake Hoyle (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Epee)
  • Adam Rodney (New Orleans, La. / Men’s Epee)
  • James Kaull (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Epee)

The Division II women’s saber event at the NAC saw the most ratings awarded with 15, including four Bs.

Four athletes earned ratings in multiple weapons in April.

Seventeen-year-old Julian Chitu (Columbus, Ohio) earned C19s in both foil and epee at the IU Spring Open, upgrading his D19 in foil and E19 in epee.

A B17 in epee, seventeen-year-old Alexander Kim (Johns Creek, Ga.) earned his B19 at the OFC Aim High Tournament and added a D19 in foil, upgrading his previous D17.  

Sixteen-year-old Grace Hayes (Denver, Colo.) renewed her D in the Division II event at the April NAC and earned her first-ever foil rating with an E19 at the Unrated 3 Weapon later in the month.

A senior at Denison University, Daniel Timmins (Granville, Ohio) renewed his E in saber at the 6th Annual Fence Fest Open and added scored his first-ever epee rating with an E19 at the Duel @ Denison D & Under.
