Top Young Fencers in the Nation to Compete in Milwaukee This Weekend

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – One of the largest tournaments for young fencers in the nation will take place this weekend in Milwaukee, Wis. with more than 2,200 athletes registered to compete at the November North American Cup.

Competition will begin on Friday and conclude on Monday at the Wisconsin Center in Halls A-D and Ballrooms A-D. Admission is $5 per day or $15 for a four-day pass. Individuals with a USA Fencing supporting membership or higher receive complimentary admission to all USA Fencing national events.

Gold medals will be awarded in junior (U20), cadet (U17) and Y14 events in all three disciplines: épée, foil and saber with athletes in the junior and cadet categories earning valuable points towards potential qualification for the 2020 Junior and Cadet World Championships in Salt Lake City. 

Finals will be contested daily with competition running from approximately 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Sixteen former Junior and Cadet World medalists are scheduled to compete in Milwaukee, including;

  • Isaac Herbst (Houston, Texas / Junior Men’s Épée), 2019 Junior World team silver medalist
  • Kamar Skeete (Duluth, Ga. / Junior Men’s Saber), 2019 Junior World team bronze medalist
  • Delphine Devore (Westport, Conn. / Junior Women’s Foil), 2018 Junior World Team Champion and 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist
  • May Tieu (Belle Mead, N.J. / Junior Women’s Foil), 2018 Junior World Team Champion and 2018 Cadet World silver medalist
  • Elizabeth Tartakovsky (Livingston, N.J. / Junior Women’s Saber), two-time Junior World team medalist and 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist
  • Tori Johnson (Peachtree City, Ga. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team silver medalist
  • Chloe Fox-Gitomer (Portland, Ore. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team silver medalist
  • Kenji Bravo (San Francisco, Calif. / Junior Men’s Foil), 2018 Junior World team bronze medalist and 2018 Cadet World Champion
  • Chloe Gouhin (Blacklick, Ohio / Junior Women’s Saber), 2019 Cadet World silver medalist
  • Honor Johnson (Bethesda, Md. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2019 Cadet World bronze medalist
  • Emily Vermeule (Cambridge, Mass. / Junior Women’s Épée), 2018 Cadet World silver medalist
  • Alexis Anglade (Alpharetta, Ga. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist
  • Ariana Mangano (Colts Neck, N.J. / Junior Women’s Épée), 2017 Junior World team bronze medalist
  • Robert Vidovszky (Emerald Hills, Calif. / Junior Men’s Saber), 2018 Cadet World silver medalist

Among this weekend’s competitors are six athletes from Wisconsin who will be competing in front of a home crowd, including:

  • Jeremy Cho (Verona, Wis. / Junior Men’s Foil)
  • Nikita Swenson (Cross Plains, Wis. / Y14 Women’s Épée)
  • Eden Tan (Brookfield, Wis. / Cadet and Y14 Women’s Foil)
  • Jacob Tan (Brookfield, Wis. / Junior Men’s Foil)
  • Sorin Caldararu (Madison, Wis. / Junior and Cadet Men’s Foil)
  • Hope Schlosser (Brookfield, Wis. / Junior Women’s Épée)

In addition to an action-packed weekend of competition, USA Fencing is hosting 30 middle school students from the Academy of Excellence in Milwaukee to participate in a two-hour STEM and fencing program on Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. – noon. Student-athletes from the Milwaukee School of Engineering Fencing Club will be conducting a hands-on demonstration exploring the science behind the Olympic sport of fencing.
