Call for Applications for 2020 FIE Budapest Coaching Academy

The FIE Budapest Coaching Academy will be held in 2020 with three-month educational sessions for each of the three weapons.

The courses will be conducted in English with approximately eight hours of sessions held daily Monday through Friday (9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.)

In addition to coaching education classes and practice, the sessions will include classes on psychology, physiology, sport theory and biomechanics.

Upon completion of the exam at the conclusion of the Academy, participants will be given an FIE diploma.

Class size is limited to eight participants per weapon (six from Europe, two from Pan America / Asia-Oceania).

USA Fencing can nominate one person to attend each session of the Academy. Please note that USA Fencing is not guaranteed a spot at the sessions.

Requirements

All candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be a current Coach, or +Coach member of USA Fencing in good standing.
  2. Must have at least seven years of fencing coaching experience.
  3. Must have health insurance for the duration of the stay in Budapest.
  4. Must be in good physical condition.
  5. Speak and understand English well.
  6. Must be eligible for a visa for Hungary (if needed).

The candidate will be responsible for his or her transportation to and from Budapest to arrive the day before the start of the Academy and leave on the day after completion of the Academy. Lodging and meals at the Academy are covered by the FIE. The candidate also is responsible for medical insurance and fees as well as visa fees and any expenses incurred during the Academy beyond housing and meals.

USA Fencing is asking its candidate to share information learned at the academy with other fencing coaches within six months of completing the course. The sharing can take the form of a coaching seminar or workshop, a series of blogs or podcast interviews.

Application Process

To apply, please follow these steps:

  1. Complete the application for the session you wish to attend.
  2. Attach a brief biography that includes your experience in the weapon, name and location of your current and recent clubs that you have coached at, and the name of your past coaches.
  3. Attach a recent color photo of yourself.
  4. Attach a copy of your passport. (Please be sure that your passport will not expire within six months of your return date from the Academy).
  5. Return the above information to USA Fencing (c.simmons@usafencing.org) by the deadline for the session. Please put FIE Fencing Academy + (Weapon) in the email subject line.

A panel of elite coaches will review applications and USA Fencing will submit one candidate per weapon to the FIE for consideration. The FIE will make the final decision on admissions to the Academy.
