(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The Federation Internationale d’Escrime announced today the cancellation of the 2020 Veteran World Championships as well as the 2020 Junior and Cadet World Championships.

The decisions were made in consultation with both the FIE Medical and Athletes’ Commissions.

The Veteran World Championships, which features the best fencers in ages categories for athletes ages 50 and older, was scheduled to take place from Oct. 23-30 in Porec, Croatia.

Previously postponed, the Junior and Cadet World Championships were to be held for the world’s best fencers ages 20 and younger from April 3-11 in Salt Lake City. This year’s competition would have marked the first return of the tournament to the United States since 2000.

“I know how much hard work all of the athletes – juniors, cadets and veterans alike – put into preparing for the World Championships this year. To dedicate thousands of hours of training to a goal and not be able to see it realized can be devastating and our hearts go out to each of you,” said USA Fencing President Donald Anthony Jr. “COVID-19 continues to have an impact on every aspect of our lives and cancelling both World Championships is in the best interest of the health

The 2020 Junior and Cadet World Championship Team was announced in April with 40 young fencers scheduled to represent Team USA.

In accordance with the procedures established in conjunction with the USA Fencing Veterans Committee and announced on June 25, USA Fencing will select an honorary 2020 Veteran World Championship Team with the four athletes for each weapon squad selected based upon the results from the 2019 December North American Cup due to the cancellation of the remaining selection events following the COVID-19 pandemic.
