2019-20 Absolute Fencing Gear All-Academic Team

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The 2019-20 Absolute Fencing Gear All-Academic Team is one of the largest in history, boasting 764 fencers who showed outstanding success in the classroom earning a 3.4 GPA or higher.

Athletes who earned a 3.85 GPA qualified for the First Team with athletes earning from 3.4 – 3.84 claiming Second Team honors.

Team members included 282 epee fencers, 238 foil fencers, 203 saber fencers and 41 multi-weapon fencers.

Sixteen members of the Absolute Fencing Gear® All-Academic Team not only earned First Team honors for all four years, but have committed to fence for NCAA programs during the upcoming season:

  • Michael Bissinger (Houston, Texas / Alliance Fencing Center /  Memorial High School / Princeton)
  • Ethan Chin (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Tim Morehouse Fencing Club / Horace Greeley High School / Columbia)
  • Maxwell Greenbaum (Atlanta, Ga. / Nellya Fencers / Ben Franklin Academy / Duke)
  • Levin Hoogendoorn (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Centre for Blade Arts / Minnetonka High School / Northwestern)
  • Sterre Hoogendoorn (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Center for Blade Arts / Minnetonka High School / Cornell)

The 2019 All-Academic Team also included eight past Junior and Cadet World Team members, including: 

  • Chloe Gouhin (Blacklick, Ohio / Nellya Fencers / Columbus Academy), 2019 Cadet World silver medalist 
  • Maia Weintraub (Philadelphia, Pa. / Fencers' Club / Friends Select School), 2020 Junior World and 2019 Cadet World Team member
  • Luke Linder (Chandler, Ariz. / Phoenix Fencing Academy / Hamilton High School & Chandler Online), 2020 Junior World and 2019 Cadet World Team member
  • Faith Park (Lorton, Va. / DC Fencers Club / South County High School), 2020 Junior and Cadet World Team member
  • Hadley Husisian (Oakton, Va. / Fencing Sports Academy / The Potomac School), 2020 Junior and Cadet World Team member
  • Tristan Szapary (Wynnewood, Pa. / Fencing Academy of Philadelphia / Friends’ Central School), 2020 Junior World Team member
  • Colby Harley (Alpharetta, Ga. / Nellya Fencers / Woodward Academy), 2020 Cadet World Team member
  • Nicholas Lawson (New York CIty, N.Y. / Fencers' Club / Trinity School), 2019 Cadet World Team member

Two high schools led the way among this year’s team members with Baylor School qualifying 14 athletes and Chatham High School qualifying 13. Baylor and Chatham each held 12 and 11 First Team members, respectively.

Among the nearly 250 clubs represented on the All-Academic roster, Alliance Fencing Academy claimed the most team members with 17 fencers, including 13 First Team members.

Fourteen clubs boasted at 10 or more All-Academic Team members, including:
