(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Fencing is pleased to announce the organization’s first-ever Leadership Academy – a six-month program which will provide educational and training opportunities for individuals interested in serving in leadership roles within the organization.
A maximum of 12 candidates will be accepted into the program with the goal of creating a diverse inaugural Leadership Academy class. Sessions will be held online as 10 three-hour courses and will cover topics such as: governance, history and organizational structure of USA Fencing and other sports governing bodies, finance, domestic and international events, youth programming, international programs and more.
Graduation from the program will be held at the USA Fencing National Championships in Philadelphia in July of 2021. In order to graduate from the program, participants must attend at least eight of 10 sessions.
Candidates are not required to have past experience in leadership roles within USA Fencing, but should be interested in becoming involved as a future leader in areas such as committees, resource teams, refereeing, club ownership or development, tournament staff, athlete or coach development, international relations, etc.
Applications must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 4.

January 10, 2021: Short History of Fencing in the U.S. Review of documents governing fencing, including, e.g. Articles of incorporation, Bylaws, Athlete’s Handbook, Strategic Plan, Ted Stevens Amateur and Olympic Sports Act and Roberts Rules of Order. Introduction to the operations of USA Fencing led by USA Fencing President, USA Fencing CEO, Chair of AAC, head of DEI Task Force and someone involved in fencing for decades.
January 24, 2021: (1) USA Fencing's governance and operational structure (the NGB system and the existence and roles of National Office, Board of Directors, committees and resource teams, divisions, regionalization, etc.; and (2) USA Fencing's relationship to and with other organizations (FIE, USOPC, Center for Safe Sport, USADA/WADA, IWAS and IOC). This session will be lead by the a Board Member, USFA CEO, Chair of AAC, USA Fencing Safe Sport Officer and an FIE Commission Member.
February 14, 2021: (1) Refereeing led by Chair of Referees’ Commission (RC), Chair of RC Domestic Development, a National Coach and USA Fencing members of FIE Rules and Arbitrage Commission. It shall include discussion of Code of Ethics and
procedure for handling breaches of the Code. (2) US SEMI and Sports Medicine, led by the Chair of US SEMI and a representative of the Sports Medicine Resource Team.
February 28, 2021: USA Fencing Finances led by CFO, Treasurer and the Director of Development and other members of Budget or Audit Committee.
March 14, 2021: International programs led by Senior Director of Sports Performance, a USOPC representative, a National Coach, Chair of RC International Development and Assignment and an International Team Manager.
April 11, 2021: USA Fencing hosted International Events, Senior Director of Sports Operations, USA Fencing Chief of Protocol and a DT president.
April 25, 2021: Ethics and Discipline, Safe Sport and DEI led by Chair of Ethics committee, Chair of RC Ethics committee, Safe Sport coordinator, Member of DEI group, USA Fencing Safe Sport and General Counsel.
