USA Fencing has learned that veteran fencer Jamie Willemse (Portland, Ore. / PDX Fencing) was critically injured on Aug. 28 in a tragic shooting following her bronze medal win at the Veteran National Championships in Atlanta.
Willemse, a 50-59 women’s saber fencer, was hit by a stray bullet in a rideshare vehicle while driving back to her hotel after a celebratory dinner.
Willemse was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery to repair multiple internal injuries and remains in serious condition.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist Willemse with her medical expenses as well as with transportation from Atlanta to Portland when she is released from the hospital in the coming days. Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-jamie-come-home.
