BURGOS, Spain, Dec. 17-19, 2021—USA Fencing junior women’s epee fencers took three medals at the “XXIII World Cup Ciudad de Burgos,” with Hadley Husisian (Fencing Sports Academy and DC Fencers Club) winning individual gold and Faith Park (DC Fencers Club) taking the silver. The U.S. junior women’s epee team won the bronze medal. The event took place at the Polideportivo Jose Luis Talamillo.
With 156 individual competitors, Husisian and Park battled their way through the eliminations after finishing pools in 61st and 9th places, respectively, to make the final round against one another. Husisian won the gold by default after Park withdrew, resulting in a 12-0 score. Facing two Russian fencers in the semifinals, Park beat Anastasiia Nazarova by a touch, 15-14, and Husisian defeated Iana Bekmurzova, 15-12.
Other Team USA junior women’s epeeists fencing results included Sarah Gu (12th, Medeo Fencing Club), Tierna Oxenreider (14th, Royal Arts Fencing Academy), Amanda Pirkowski (36th, Univ. of Notre Dame NCAA), Meghana Paturu (62nd, Medeo Fencing Club), Michaela Joyce (71st, Cardinal Fencing Academy), Victoria Kuznetsov (79th, Lilov Fencing Academy), Yasmine Khamis (82nd, Alliance Fencing Academy) and Amanda O’Donnell (91st, Windy City Fencing-Chicago).
After Israel beat Team USA (Hadley Husisian, Michaela Joyce, Yasmine Khamis, Amanda Pirkowski) in the semifinals of the junior women’s team epee event, 45-36, the U.S. went on to beat France and win the bronze medal in the fight for third place, 28-24. Russia took the gold medal over Israel, 45-34. In all, 17 teams competed.
