Team USA Junior Fencers Win Five Medals in European World Cups

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 24, 2022—Team USA fencers are returning home with five medals for junior saber and foil in European World Cups in Spain, Croatia and France this past weekend, including three gold-medal titles.

Ciudad de Segovia – Junior Women’s Saber World Cup in Segovia, Spain

Two Team USA Fencers took gold and silver in Segovia, Spain, at the “Ciudad de Segovia” Junior Women’s Saber World Cup that took place at the Pabellon Polideportivo “Pedro Delgado” with 123 fencers and 12 teams competing.

Siobhan Sullivan (Oregon Fencing Alliance) won the individual junior event, narrowly defeating her teammate, Jenna Shoman (Manhattan Fencing Center), by a single touch, 15-14. Shoman beat Hungary’s Dorottya Beviz (HUN) in the semifinals, 15-13, and Sullivan defeated Italy’s Carlotta Fusetti, 15-11. Additionally, six U.S. athletes made top results including Zoe Kim (Forward Fencing Academy) taking sixth place after beating teammate Honor Johnson (14, Bergen Fencing Club) in the 16, 15-14; Magda Skarbonkiewicz (Oregon Fencing Alliance) taking eighth place after defeating Veronika Vasileva (AUS), 15-3; and Kaitlyn Pak (11, Manhattan Fencing Center) winning against Lena Stemper (GER), 15-10 in the 32. Other U.S. results included Tatiana Nazlymov (20, Nazlymov Fencing Foundation), Alexandra Lee (21, Premier Fencing Academy), Lola Possick (23, Advance Fencing and Fitness Academy), Chelsea Delsoin (29, Advance Fencing and Fitness Academy), Ella Greenbaum (66, Nellya Fencers) and Madeline Engelman-Sanz (96, Bergen Fencing Club).

In women’s junior team saber, USA (Chelsea Delsoin, Zoe Kim, Kaitlyn Pak, Lola Possick) took fifth place, with Hungary winning against them, 45-35, in the quarterfinals.

Challenge Vladimir Mazuranic Junior Women’s Foil World Cup in Zagreb, Croatia

Lauren Scruggs (Peter Westbrook Foundation) and Team USA won individual and team gold medals along with an individual bronze for Helen Tan (Fencing Institute of Texas) at the Challenge Vladimir Mazuranic Junior Women’s Foil World Cup in Zagreb, Croatia. The event took place at the Sports Center “Dom Sportova,” with 165 fencers and 19 teams participating.

Scruggs faced Italy’s Carlotta Ferrari in the final round, winning with a 15-9 score. In the semifinals, Scruggs overcame Italian Giulia Amore, 15-11, to make the finals. In the quarterfinals Amore won against Zander Rhodes (6, V Fencing Club), 15-13, who finished in sixth place. Also in the quarters, Helen Tan faced teammate Rachael Kim (7, Top Fencing Club), with Tan taking the win with a 15-13 score. After Ferrari won against her in the semifinals, 15-10, Tan took the bronze medal.

Other Team USA individual results included Arianna Cao (11, Massialas Foundation (M Team)), Chin-Yi Kong (13, Golden State Fencing Academy), Ryanne Leslie (37, V Fencing Club), Crystal Qian (45, Silicon Valley Fencing Center), Sophia Shen (51, Star Fencing Academy), Sabrina Cho (65, Univ. of Pennsylvania NCAA), Elizabeth He (70, Space City Fencing Academy) and Evelyn Cheng (71, Silicon Valley Fencing Center).

It was gold for the Team USA women’s foilists (Chin-Yi Kong, Zander Rhodes, Lauren Scruggs, Helen Tan) beating top-seeded Russia in the finals of the junior women’s team event to win with a 44-35 score. In the semifinals, USA beat Ukraine, 45-36.

Challenge International Licciardi Junior Men’s Foil World Cup in Aix-en-Provence, France

Four members of the Team USA junior men’s foil team earned top-16 results in the Challenge International Licciardi Junior Men’s Foil World Cup in Aix-en-Provence, France, with USA fencing fifth in the team competition. The event took place at the Gymnase Louison Bobet, with 188 fencers and 21 teams competing.

Top-16 USA fencers included Bryce Louie (LA International Fencing), winning against Edriss Ndiaye (Fencing Sports Academy, Inc.) in the 32, 15-10; James Chen (Harvard Univ. NCAA), beating Brandon Li (Marx Fencing Academy), 15-10; Daniel Zhang (Star Fencing Academy), defeating Italy’s Giuseppe Franzoni, 15-5; and William Kelly (LA International Fencing), who won against Germany’s Laurenz Doerfer, 15-4.

Overall results for the USA junior men’s foilists included William Kelly (9), James Chen (12), Bryce Louie (14), Daniel Zhang (16), Brandon Li (21), Sanjay Kasi (24, Gutkovskiy Fencing Academy), John Griffin (26, unattached), Edriss Ndiaye (27), Eric Yu (29, Univ. of Pennsylvania NCAA), Enoch Xiao (44, Birmingham Fencing Club), Jun Heng (James) Liao (47, Fencers Club Inc.) and Nicholas Kim (79, Top Fencing Club).

In the junior men’s foil team event, Team USA (John Griffin, Bryce Louie, Edriss Ndiaya, Eric Yu) defeated Brazil in the 16, 45-40, before losing to Hungary in the quarterfinals, 45-40, giving them fifth place overall. Italy took the gold medal over Poland, with Russia taking bronze.
