Team USA Juniors, Cadets Capture Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in Three European Events

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 4-6—Team USA juniors and cadets fenced in foil, epee and saber World Cups this weekend in France, Serbia and Bulgaria, scoring a total of three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Paris Challenge CEP – Marathon Cadet Foil 2022

In a sweep of medals for USA in individual cadet men’s and women’s foil, Nicholas Kim (Top Fencing Club) took the men’s gold against teammate Ethan Um (Marx Fencing Academy) and Emily Jing (Marx Fencing Academy) won the women’s title against teammate Arianna Cao (Massialas Foundation (M Team)) at the Paris (France) Challenge CEP Marathon Cadet Foil event. Jeidus Deseranno (Renaissance Fencing Club) scored the men’s bronze, and the women’s went to Ryanne Leslie (V Fencing Club).* The event took place at the Halle Carpentier, with 102 men and 104 women cadet foilists competing.**

In the final match of cadet men’s foil, Kim beat Um by a touch, 15-14. Um overcame Deseranno in the semifinal, 15-11, and Kim defeated Caleb Jeon (Silicon Valley Fencing Center), 15-11. The bronze medal went to Deseranno over Jeon (4), 15-13.

In the final match of cadet women’s foil, Jing took the win over Cao, 15-10. Cao beat Katerina Lung (Moe Fencing Club LLC), 15-13, while Jing defeated Leslie, 14-11. The bronze medal went to Leslie over Lung (4), 15-10.

*Note: As there was a fence-off for third place, only one bronze was given in each event.

**Only cadet events were covered at this competition in these highlights, as they were the only ones officially designated by USA Fencing.  

 

Belgrade Men’s Epee “Star Cup 2022” Junior World Cup

Henry Lawson (Fencers Club Inc.) took the individual silver medal at the Belgrade, Serbia Men’s Epee “Star Cup 2022” Junior World Cup and Team USA finished in fourth place. The event took place at the CKS Sumice venue, with 222 junior men’s epeeists and 22 teams competing.

In a close semifinal match, Lawson defeated Switzerland’s Sven Vineis, 15-14, to make the final. Italy’s Filippo Armaleo took the gold against Lawson, winning with a 15-10 score. Other USA rankings included Gabriel Feinberg (9, Olympic Fencing Center), Skyler Liverant (35, New York Fencing Academy), Nicholas Lawson (49, Fencers Club Inc.), Noah Silvers (60, Windy City Fencing – Chicago), Ethan Kushnerik (64, New York Athletic Club), Kent Iyoki (94T, Northwest Fencing Center), Thomas (Tony) Whelan (96, Olympia Fencing Center), Ryan Lee (109, Swords Fencing Studio) and Nicholas Candela (140, Battle Born Fencing Club).

Team USA (Gabriel Feinberg, Henry Lawson, Nicholas Lawson, Skyler Liverant) defeated Hungary in the quarterfinals, 45-30, to advance to the semifinals against Egypt. In a tight 43-42 finish, Egypt got the winning point against the U.S. men, advancing to the finals against Switzerland. Team USA then faced Ukraine for the bronze medal, with Ukraine taking the win with a 45-41 score. Egypt won the gold medal against the Swiss, 45-38.

 

Plovdiv “Asparoukhs’ Sword” Junior Men’s and Women’s Saber World Cup

Magda Skarbonkiewicz (Oregon Fencing Alliance) and Atara Greenbaum (Univ. of Notre Dame NCAA) took gold and silver in women’s individual saber at the Plovdiv, Bulgaria Junior Men’s and Women’s Saber “Asparoukh’s Sword” World Cup, taking place at the Sports Complex SILA with 134 men and 85 women competing overall.

In junior men’s individual saber, Elden Wood (17, Manhattan Fencing Center) made the top 32 along with teammates Ronald Anglade (22, Nellya Fencers), Colby Harley (25, Nellya Fencers), William Morrill (26, Fencers Club Inc.), Sean Moon (28, Univ. of Notre Dame NCAA) and Jaden Callahan (32, Spartak USA). Other U.S. men’s rankings included Connor Liang (51, Laguna Fencing Center), Matthew Limb (61, Avant Garde Fencers Club, Inc.), Matthew Linsky (71, Manhattan Fencing Center), Faaris Hussain (74, Nellya Fencers) and Cody Ji (93, Nellya Fencers).

In junior women’s individual saber, Skarbonkiewicz defeated Greenbaum in the final, 15-8. Greenbaum beat France’s Amalia Aime in the semifinals, 15-10, while Skarbonkiewicz overcame Italy’s Carlotta Fusetti, 15-13. Other USA rankings in women’s foil included Siobhan Sullivan (9, Oregon Fencing Alliance), Jenna Shoman (10, Manhattan Fencing Center), Jadeyn Williams (17, Advance Fitness and Fencing Academy), Tatiana Nazlymov (18, Nazlymov Fencing Foundation), Kaitlyn Pak (19, Manhattan Fencing Center), Kunling Tong (22, Nellya Fencers), Lola Possick (27, Advance Fitness and Fencing Academy), Alexandra Lee (35, Premier Fencing Academy LLC) and Amanda Li (53, Advance Fitness and Fencing Academy).
