Jennette Starks-Faulkner hadn’t fenced in 12 years when she got a call from her friend and frequent on-the-strip rival Anne-Marie Walters. That phone call relaunched Starks-Faulkner’s fencing career and has now led to a 2022 national championship.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Jennette Starks-Faulkner (Connecticut Fencers Club) hadn’t fenced in 12 years when she got a call from her friend and frequent on-the-strip rival Anne-Marie Walters (Masters Fencing Club).

Walters was looking for a training and travel partner and believed she had the perfect person for the job.

“I’m so thankful she made me come back. Because yes, you can do it forever,” Starks-Faulkner says. “And I when I came back, I realized how much I love the sport. It had nothing to do with the winning — it’s learning how to fence, understanding the theory behind what you're doing, understanding the beautiful movements that you see. Everything about fencing is great, and you could do it forever. I plan to do it as long as my body will allow me to.”

Starks-Faulkner showed no signs of slowing down on Wednesday in Minneapolis, earning a gold medal and national championship in Vet-60 Women’s Foil.

Her gold was one of 18 medals awarded on the fifth day of the 2022 USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge, or Summer Nationals.

That included Veteran national championships won in all age classifications for women’s foil and men’s epee.

In the Vet-50, Vet-60 and Vet-70 age categories, Summer Nationals was the last chance to earn qualifying points toward the Veteran World Championships this October in Croatia.

In cadet competition, golds were secured by Liam Bas (Gutkovskiy Fencing Academy) in cadet men’s foil, Alexander Bezrodnov (Medeo Fencing Club) in cadet men’s epee, Janna N. Freedman (South Bay Fencing Academy) in cadet women’s saber and Katerina Lung (Moe Fencing Club LLC) in cadet women’s foil.

Speaking of cadets, women's saber athlete Jenna Shoman (Manhattan Fencing Center) finished pools with a rare perfect record — 30 touches for, none against.

Team event gold medalists included The Tri-State Troublemakers (veteran men’s saber), The Roses (veteran women’s epee), Reptilian Club Boyz (senior men’s saber) and Persuasian (senior women’s epee).
