Even though competition has only just begun, there’s already good news to share: Princeton graduate Kasia Nixon won bronze in the Women’s Epee individual competition on the tournament’s first day.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Imagine the world's most exhilarating college sports party — then supersize it. That's the spirit of the FISU World University Games, a thrilling multisport jamboree hosted every two years that united student-athletes from all corners of the globe. The 2023 World University Games are swinging into action in Chengdu, China, following a pandemic-induced pause in 2021.

During this 12-day competition, 15 different sports will grace the event, and we're delighted to say that fencing is one of them. Team USA has sent 22 talented fencers to represent the red, white and blue on the global stage. (Get your live results here.)

Though the tournament has just begun, we've already got some thrilling news to share: Princeton grad Kasia Nixon won bronze in the Women’s Epee individual competition on the very first day of the tournament.

Speaking of firsts, the inaugural Summer Universiade was held in Italy in 1959, but Team USA’s first individual medal at the tournament didn’t come until 1985. That makes Nixon’s achievement even more impressive.

What’s more, Nixon becomes just the third individual medalist for Team USA at the World University Games, joining Michael Marx (1985, silver in men’s foil) and Adrienne Jarocki (2015, bronze in women’s saber).

As for the team events, Team USA has medaled four times:

  • 1999, silver for Women’s Foil team of Ann Marsh-Senic, Erinn Smart, Felicia Zimmermann and Iris Zimmermann

  • 2011, silver for Women’s Epee team of Holly Buechel, Courtney Hurley, Kelley Hurley and Susannah Scanlan

  • 2015, bronze for Women’s Epee team of Danielle Henderson, Jessie Radanovich, Amanda Sirico and Nina Van Loon

  • 2017, silver for Women’s Epee team of Kat Holmes, Kasia Nixon, Anna Van Brummen and Barbara Vanbenthuysen

The World University Games are on, and each touch promises a thrilling opportunity for Team USA's fencing squad. Tune in, cheer them on and let's bring home some more medals!
