HONG KONG, China — USA collegiate fencers competed in a two-day invitational competition in Hong Kong on Aug. 11 and 12, winning five of six individual events in men’s and women’s epee, foil and saber.
On the second day of competition, a mixed-team event was held. More than 30 students from 10 U.S. schools participated, fencing against students from three Chinese universities. The event was co-hosted by the Absolute Development and Exchange Foundation (ADAEF) and Hong Kong Baptist University, where the competition was held.
This event previously took place annually throughout Asia, having paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past few years. The last event was in Singapore in 2019.
“We are happy to be back and sponsoring our yearly invitational collegiate tournament,” says ADAEF President Gary Lu. “With this event, our U.S. college fencers take part in an enriching fencing and cultural experience unlike any other, competing internationally and making new friends with other students from home and abroad. We very much appreciate working with everyone at Hong Kong Baptist University to make this a success for everyone.”
In the individual events on the first day, winners included Sabrina Cho (Univ. of Pennsylvania) taking gold in women’s foil; Jasper Levy (Princeton Univ.) winning men’s foil; Justin Haddad (Columbia Univ.) winning men’s epee; Chloe Gouhin (Columbia Univ.) taking women’s saber; and Donghwan Park (Stanford Univ.) winning men’s saber. Nuo Zu (Tsinghua Univ.) won women’s epee.
The second day featured a mixed-team event, held in an “Italian relay” style, which has six-person teams (three weapons, men and women) fencing one-another to potential maximum of 30 points (up to five points in each bout). Fencers are randomly paired with students from different universities and countries playing on each team.
In the round-robin event, each team fences each team throughout the day, with the teams winning the most victories and indicators taking gold, silver and bronze medals.
