COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Creativity counts in fencing —  both on and off the strip. That's why we’re excited to announce the return of the USA Fencing National Poster Design Challenge for the 2023-24 season.

Now in its second year, this contest invites our members to channel their artistic talents into creating posters that encapsulate the spirit of fencing — a sport that is diverse, fun, accessible and safe for everyone.

Last year's competition showcased the incredible range of artistic talent within our community. While there were dozens of great submissions, Ian Kim of Battle Born Fencing Club in Las Vegas, Nev., took the top spot after an Instagram vote. That earned Ian a free USA Fencing Competitive membership for the 2023-24 season.

All submissions, including those from our finalists, were proudly displayed near the registration desks at USA Fencing tournaments throughout the 2022-23 season.

For the 2023-24 season, we're upping the ante with not one but two categories:

  • Artwork generated either entirely or partially with the help of AI.

  • "Human-made" artwork not made with AI.

What Kind of Artwork Should I Submit?

USA Fencing aims to create safe and inclusive spaces that challenge the status quo and promote unity. Therefore, we're seeking designs that focus on:

  • Anti-Discrimination

  • The message that fencing is for all

  • Anti-sexual harassment

  • Anti-emotional abuse

  • Mental health awareness

  • Environmental justice

  • Fencing is for people with disabilities, including but not limited to parafencing

We're also interested in designs that can educate newcomers about:

  • Qualifying for national or international events

  • Basic rules of fencing

  • Why someone should try fencing

What Are the Rules?

The challenge is open to anyone age 13 or older. You can enter as an individual or as a team of up to three people.

When submitting, indicate whether your work was created with the assistance of AI.

Submissions are accepted at this link through Dec. 31, 2023.

  • Your design can be hand-drawn or digital.

  • If hand-drawn, please scan at high resolution.

  • Upload as a .jpg file (minimum 8.5 x 11″ at 300 dpi).

  • No copyrighted material, but USA Fencing and/or USA Parafencing logos are permitted.

  • Include your name and/or Instagram handle in the lower corner if you wish.

How Are Winners Selected and Notified?

Semifinalists will be featured in an online exhibition and on social media. Four finalists will have their designs printed on posters for display at national tournaments and as marketing materials for USA Fencing clubs. One grand prize winner will receive a free USA Fencing Competitive membership for the 2024-25 season.

A selection committee of USA Fencing staffers and committee members will vote on the finalists. These finalists will then have an opportunity to meet virtually with the committee to discuss their vision.

Individuals with disabilities may submit a written or audio description of their idea (200 words or less) to information@usafencing.org with "National Poster Design Challenge" in the subject line.
