Team USA Fencers Earn a Pair of Individual Medals as Race for Paris Heats Up
In the first weekend of the senior FIE season, Alexander Massialas OLY earned gold in Turkey, while Margherita Guzzi Vincenti secured her first career World Cup medal with a gold in Italy.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The 2023-24 senior FIE season is here at last, and Team USA is looking sharp.
In the Men’s Foil World Cup in Istanbul, world No. 1 Alexander Massialas OLY (Massialas Foundation — M Team) earned a gold medal — his ninth career gold at an FIE World Cup or Grand Prix event and fourth gold medal in the calendar year.
And in the Women’s Epee World Cup in Legnano, Italy, Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Ataba Fencing Club) also earned gold, breaking through with her first career medal at a senior-level World Cup or Grand Prix. The 2010 NCAA champion and 2014 Division I Women’s Epee national champion will see this result as a huge step toward her dream of representing Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.
In her journey to the top of the medal stand, Guzzi Vincenti defeated an impressive lineup of women, including Tokyo team gold medalist and individual bronze medalist Katrina Lehis. Her gold is the second ever individual gold medal at a Women’s Epee world cup for Team USA (the other was Anna Van Brummen’s gold at the 2016 Suzhou World Cup in China).
While our medalists grab the headlines, the weekend also saw impressive finishes for a number of Team USA athletes, including top 16 results for Tatiana Nazlymov, Maia Chamberlain, Colin Heathcock and Eli Dershwitz OLY at the Alger World Cup in Algeria and a 13th-place finish for Jonas Hansen at the Bern World Cup in Switzerland.
Congratulations to these fencers and all who competed this weekend. And we can’t forget the teams behind the team — coaches, sports med providers, parents, teammates, clubmates and everyone else who ensures our athletes are at their best month after month.
