The medals provide important momentum as Team USA continues its qualifying journey toward the Paris Olympics.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Individual medals, like those earned on Saturday by world No. 1s Alexander Massialas and Lee Kiefer are pinnacle achievements in the sport of fencing.

But Team USA fans following the road to the Paris Olympics know that the team events at FIE World Cups hold the key to unlocking a full team for the United States at the 2024 Games.

The top four teams in each weapon — plus the top-ranked team in each of the four FIE zones (Team USA is in the America zone) — get to send a full team to the Olympics. That means three athletes who can compete in both the individual and team event, plus a fourth alternate/replacement athlete who can be subbed into the team event only.

The ranking to determine those eight teams is based solely on results in the team event at FIE competitions. That makes each match — whether it's for a gold medal or an 11th-place finish — extremely important.

With that lengthy preface out of the way, we have good news: two Team USA squads finished their weekends with medals.

Congratulations to our Senior Women's Foil team of Jackie Dubrovich OLY, Lee Kiefer OLY, Zander Rhodes and Lauren Scruggs, for winning gold in Novi Sad, Serbia. The team defeated frequent rivals Italy in a pressure-packed gold medal match.

Several hours later, Team USA earned another medal — this time in Senior Women's Epee, where the quartet of Anne Cebula, Margherita Guzzi Vincenti, Kat Holmes OLY and Kasia Nixon earned silver in Vancouver, Canada.

It's the best finish in the team event for Women's Epee since the 2018 Worlds, where the Americans won gold.

These two squads were in Olympic qualifying position when their tournaments began, but their results on Sunday will help strengthen their positions in the rankings.

Congratulations to these phenomenal athletes, as well as their coaches, families and supporters!
