The second day of the January NAC highlighted outstanding achievements and community spirit

SAN JOSE, Calif. -  The second day of the 2024 January North American Cup brought more medals to hardworking fencers. There were 14 gold medals earned throughout the day, where each fencer stood proud on the podium.

Division I Women’s Saber gold medalist, Maia Chamberlain (Manhattan Fencing Center) had an incredibly special day as she fenced in front of family and friends where her fencing career started. She said “So I grew up in the Bay Area, and this is my first time winning a national competition here. I just started my first NAC here, and my first summer nationals. My very first coach, Eric, came over today, and all of my elementary school friends came, so it really meant a lot to me.”

Veteran Women’s Epee gold medalist Kira Hansen (Academy Of Fencing Masters (AFM)), had herself a great day as well “It feels great, re-earned my A [rating] first thing in the year, and had some really really strong bouts.” Hansen talked about her goals for the year and said they included “just keep trying to make it to practice, stay happy, positive, and work hard.”

Ronald Thornton (Capital Fencing Academy), the Vet-50 Men’s Saber gold medalist talked about why he comes back NAC after NAC, year after year, “Coming here and fencing all my friends. Not just in my age category but in the Vet 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, my teammates are fencing here, Chris Matt, Garik Gutman, Jeannine Bender, my wife is fencing tomorrow, so just coming here, it’s honestly just a big family reunion.”
