PORTLAND, Ore. - Day one of the March NAC in Portland kicked off with high energy and fierce competition, setting the stage for an action-packed weekend ahead.

Nathaniel Wimmer ((Elite Fencing Academy (VA) / Elite Fencing Academy (GA)) took home gold in the Cadet Men’s Epee event. He said it felt “amazing” to be bringing home gold. He continued saying, “I had a lot of close bouts, and fenced against a lot of teammates which wasn’t really fun, but all that challenge made the win feel better.”

Wimmer also had a piece of advice for the younger fencers competing this weekend, for whom this might be their first tournament. He said “Even if you see a challenge in your tournament here, don’t let that stop you from continuing.”

Bernardita Carceller (Epee Miami Fencing Club) claimed gold in the Y-10 Women’s Epee event where she said she felt “really proud” of herself. She said that this was special because she worked incredibly hard in practice, even “sometimes doing extra practice.”  Even after winning gold this weekend she said her favorite part of coming to NAC’s is “getting to go to places I have never been to.”

Christopher Guffey (Globus Fencing Academy) talked about how special his win in the Cadet Men’s Saber event was since the last year “has been a dry spell” of wins for him. He said “It’s kind of surprising, but I trained really hard. It’s kind of been a dry spell for the past season, it’s a really big step in the right direction." 

He had been battling cramping leading up to the tournament so to keep calm and tune out the pain he said "I always had airpods in, just to keep my mind off the pain." He was super proud he was able to tune everything out and bring home gold.
