PORTLAND, Ore. -  Day three at the March NAC in Portland marked another day of intense competition. Fencers continued to showcase their skills and determination, keeping the energy high throughout the day.

Y-12 Women’s Foil gold medalist, Joanna Wang (Mid-Island Fencing Academy / V Fencing Club), said it felt good to win gold. She talked about her favorite part of coming to NAC’s is her “friends cheering for her.” She gave special shoutouts to all her friends for their help in reaching the top of the podium, as her fan club stood by cheering her on during her interview.

Regina Lee (Swords Fencing Studio), Y-14 Women’s Epee gold medalist added to her collection. Lee just came off of winning the Cadet Women’s Epee event at the 2024 Junior Olympics. This is Lee’s last national tournament before representing Team USA at the 2024 Junior and Cadet World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in April.

“It feels great; it’s a first experience. I have been up on the finals strip before, but I have never won,” said Wesley Kropp (Fencing Sports Academy, Inc.), Y-10 Men’s Epee gold medalist. He described the moment he realized he won as “just shocking.” After a long afternoon of fighting every DE as hard as he could, he expressed, “It’s really shocking how I made it this far.”

He also commented on fencing in front of a large crowd: “I kinda block the crowd out so I can focus on the bout, but after every touch, the loud ‘let’s go’ really resonated, and it made me want to fence harder.

Y-12 Men’s Saber gold medalist Howard Li (LA Fencing Academy of Pomona) said it felt good to be bringing home gold and when he realized he had won “I was pumped.” He said his secret to success is “training, just train a lot, a lot, a lot.”

On the front of training he said his biggest piece of advice for anyone coming to their first national tournament is to focus on your footwork: “Basics like footwork. If your footwork is big, you get counter attacks.”
