(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Anna Van Brummen (Houston, Texas) won her second career silver medal at a Junior World Cup and moved into a top-10 junior world ranking on Sunday when the 18-year-old placed second at the Bratislava Junior Epee World Cup in Slovakia.

Van Brummen was joined in the top eight by Kat Holmes (Washington, D.C.) – her teammate on the squad that won bronze at the Junior World Championships in April.

Competing in a field of 200 fencers, Van Brummen was seeded fifth after a 6-0 result in the pools and earned a bye into the table of 128 where she defeated Camille Hazard (FRA), 15-3.

In the table of 64, Van Brummen defeated Nadine Stahlberg (GER), 15-11.

Van Brummen met her U.S. teammate, Isabella Barna (Bend, Ore.) in the table of 32 where the two had a close bout, but Van Brummen pulled out the victory, 15-13.

Van Brummen won her next bout, 15-11, against Roberta Marzani (ITA) to advance to the quarter-finals.

Holmes, who upset top-seeded Anna Salminen (FIN), 15-8, in the table of 32, also reached the quarters, but she finished eighth after a 15-12 loss to Reka Bohus (HUN).

Van Brummen defeated Jagoda Zagala (POL), 15-13, in the quarter-finals and went on to earn a 15-9 victory over Bohus in the semifinals.

In the gold medal bout, Violetta Khrapina (RUS) held a 14-13 lead, but Van Brummen scored again to tie the bout at 14. Khrapina scored the last touch to earn the win, 15-14.

Competition also was held in the men’s epee event.

Eighteen-year-old Lewis Weiss (Houston, Texas) won three straight bouts and earned the top finish for the U.S. men with a 15th place result. 

Three U.S. men advanced to the table of 64, but each were eliminated in that round.

Samuel Freiman (Woodlands, Texas), Conor Shepard (Colleyville, Texas) and James Salem (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 40^th, 60^th and 62^nd, respectively.
