November North American Cup Preview

More than 1,000 fencers from across the United States are scheduled to compete in the November North American Cup in Virginia Beach this weekend.


(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – More than 1,000 fencers from across the United States are scheduled to compete in the November North American Cup in Virginia Beach this weekend.

Competition will be held from Friday through Monday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Halls A-D. All events are free and open to the public.

Athletes will be competing in the second national tournament of the new season after the London Olympic Games in a key qualifying tournament for the 2013 Senior World Championships in August as well as the 2013 Cadet and Junior World Championships in April.

Fencers will compete in each of the three weapons: epee, foil and saber in individual junior (U20) and Division I events as well as senior team competitions.

Thirteen members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team will be in action, including:

  • Maya Lawrence (Teaneck, N.J.), 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in women’s team epee
  • Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas), 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in women’s team epee
  • Susie Scanlan (St. Paul, Minn.), 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in women’s team epee
  • Tim Morehouse (New York City, N.Y.), 2008 Olympic silver medalist in men’s team saber
  • Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.), 2011 Senior World bronze medalist in women’s individual foil
  • Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.), 2010 Senior World bronze medalist in men’s individual foil
  • Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.), 2010 Senior World Championships fifth-place finisher in men’s individual foil
  • Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.), three-time Junior World Team Champion in men’s team foil
  • Nzingha Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 2011 Junior World Champion in women’s individual foil
  • Nicole Ross (New York City, N.Y.), 2009 Junior World Champion in women’s team foil
  • Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y.), 2011 Pan American Champion in men’s individual saber
  • Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.), 2012 Pan American Champion in women’s team foil
  • Jeff Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.), 2012 Pan American Champion in men’s team saber

Other athletes to watch include 12 medalists from the 2012 Junior and Cadet World Championships who are seeking berths on the 2013 Junior World Team and will be fencing in both the junior and Division I events:

  • Jerry Chang (Mountain View, Calif.), 2012 Junior World Champion in men’s team foil
  • Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.), three-time Junior World medalist in women’s foil
  • Jacqueline Dubrovich (Riverdale, N.J.), two-time Junior World silver medalist in women’s team foil
  • Katharine Holmes (Washington, D.C.), two-time Junior World medalist in women’s team epee
  • Audrey Abend (New York City, N.Y.), 2012 Junior World bronze medalist in women’s team epee
  • Anna Van Brummen (Houston, Texas), 2012 Junior World bronze medalist in women’s team epee
  • Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.), 2012 Junior World silver medalist in men’s individual foil
  • Sara Taffel (New York City, N.Y.), 2012 Cadet World silver medalist in women’s individual foil
  • Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.), 2012 Cadet World silver medalist in men’s individual saber
  • Skyla Powers (Atlanta, Ga.), 2012 Cadet World bronze medalist in women’s individual saber
  • Jessie Radanovich (Tollhouse, Calif.), 2012 Cadet World bronze medalist in women’s individual epee
  • Alexander Eldeib (Burke, Va.), 2012 Cadet World bronze medalist in men’s individual epee

Three additional medalists from the 2012 Junior and Cadet World Team will be eligible for the 2013 squad, but each will be fencing in the Division I event only, including Olympians Kiefer and Massialas as well as Francesca Russo (Wayne, N.J.) who won bronze at the Cadet Worlds in the women’s individual saber event.
