Competing at the Veteran Worlds for the first time, Smith was undefeated in the pools and earned a bye into the table of 16 as the event’s top seed.

Smith won her first direct elimination bout against Caron Hale (GBR), 10-7, to advance to the quarters.

Bender also drew a bye into the table of 16 where she defeated Tatiana Goryunova (RUS), 10-9.

Both athletes won their quarter-final bouts as well with Smith defeating Sylvie Zini (FRA), 10-5, and Bender winning her bout against Marie Teresa Conconi (ITA), 10-9.

In the semifinals, 2011 Veteran World Champion Friederike Janshen (GER) defeated Bender, 10-3.

Smith won her semifinal against Claudia Bandieri (ITA), 10-7, but lost her final bout to Janshen, 10-5.

Two-time Veteran World Champion Jane Eyre (Swedesboro, N.J.) and 2011 bronze medalist Lydia Mazorol (Simi Valley, Calif.) were both eliminated in the table of 16.

Mazorol defeated Alla Troshina (RUS), 10-9, in the table of 32, but lost by the same score to Zini in the table of 16.

Eyre earned a bye into the table of 16, but lost her bout to Conconi, 10-8.

In the women’s +70 foil event, Ellen O’Leary (Decatur, Ga.) returned to the strip after winning gold in the saber event on Friday.

O’Leary drew her teammate, Patricia Bedrosian (Malibu, Calif.), in the table of 16 and failed to advance after Bedrosian won the bout, 10-9.

Bedrosian, who won bronze in the epee event on Thursday, placed seventh after a 10-2 loss to Marie Chantal Demaille – the Frenchwoman who defeated Bedrosian in the epee semifinals as well and would go on to win her 12^th Veteran World title.

Diane Reckling (White Plains, N.Y.) earned Team USA’s best result in the +70 foil with a fifth-place finish. Reckling defeated Nicole Tissier (FRA), 7-6, in the table of 16, but lost to Motoko Kitami (JPN), 9-7, before Kitami went on to claim her first Veteran World bronze medal.

Bettie Graham (Washington, D.C.), a 2011 Veteran World medalist in epee, defeated two-time Veteran World medalist Lia Saracino (GER), 10-7, in the table of 16, but finished eighth after a 10-2 loss to eventual bronze medalist Barbel Gorius (GER).

Former Veteran World medalists Jere Bothelio (San Jose, Calif.) and Bob Cochrane (Lake Worth, Fla.) were both eliminated in the table of 16 in the men’s 60-69 epee event.

Seeded first in the event, Bothelio earned a bye into the table of 32 where he defeated Aleksandar Anastasov (MKD), 8-5. The win came following Anastasov’s table of 64 victory over Robert Lipp (Los Gatos, Calif.) by a score of 10-6.

In the table of 16, Bothelio lost his bout to Frantisek Rynes (CZE), 10-8.

Cochrane also earned a bye into the table of 32 where he posted Team USA’s first shutout of the tournament with a 10-0 victory over Isamu Okura (JPN). Okura’s countryman, Eiichi Ide, ended Cochrane’s quest for a medal win a 10-5 win in the table of 16.

Charles Schneider (Novi, Mich.) won his table of 64 bout against Cord Von Brandis (NOR), 10-6. Schneider just missed advancing to the table of 16 when he lost his next bout to Patrick Malafosse (FRA), 10-9.

Team USA’s four men’s +70 epee fencers were each eliminated in the table of 32.

Mark Henry (Potomac, Md.) defeated Shozo Fujita (JPN), 7-6, in the table of 64, but lost to Leopold Pasmans (BEL), 10-4.

After a bye into the table of 32, James Adams (Rockville, Md.) lost to Franz Hirt (GER), 5-4. A five-time Veteran World medalist, Adams will have another chance at the podium when he competes in the +70 foil event on Sunday.

Marcel Miernik (Irvington, N.Y.), a 2010 Veteran World silver medalist, also will fence in the foil event on Sunday after a 10-5 loss to Volker Hrovat (AUS) in the table of 32.

Former Veteran World Champion Kazimieras Campe (Edgewater, Md.) also drew a bye, but lost to 2003 Veteran World medalist Malcom Fare (GBR), 10-5.
