New Athlete Council Elected for Next Quad

Eleven elite athletes have been elected to the USA Fencing Athlete Council – including three members of the USA Fencing Board of Directors and representatives to the U.S. Olympic Committee Athlete Advisory Council.

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Eleven elite athletes have been elected to the USA Fencing Athlete Council – including three members of the USA Fencing Board of Directors and representatives to the U.S. Olympic Committee Athlete Advisory Council.

Reigning Men’s Epee Team World Champions Soren Thompson (New York City, N.Y.) and Cody Mattern (Colorado Springs, Colo.) as well as two-time Senior World team medalist Daria Schneider (New York City, N.Y.) will represent USA Fencing athletes on the Board of Directors for the next quadrennium.

The USA Fencing Athlete Council elected Thompson as the Council Chair. Mattern will serve as USA Fencing’s representative to the AAC and Schneider was named the alternate AAC representative.

Athletes ranked in the top-32 for each men’s and women’s weapon each voted for a representative to the USA Fencing Athlete Council.

Mattern and Schneider were elected as the men’s epee and women’s saber representatives, respectively.

The following athletes were elected to the remaining squad representative positions on the Athlete Council:

  • Ryan Estep (Florence, Miss.) – Wheelchair Representative
  • Natalie Vie (Phoenix, Ariz.) – Women’s Epee Representative
  • Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) – Women’s Foil Representative
  • Greg Chang (Lexington, Mass.) – Men’s Foil Representative
  • Jeff Spear (Wyantskill, N.Y.) – Men’s Saber Representative

Four athletes were selected by the Athlete Council to sit as incumbent members of the Council. These include Thompson and the following members: 

  • Holly Buechel (New York City, N.Y.) – Women’s Epee Fencer
  • Iris Zimmermann (Rochester, N.Y.) – Women’s Foil Fencer
  • Rafael Suarez (Miami, Fla.) – Men’s Foil Fencer
