(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Athens Olympian Soren Thompson (New York City, N.Y.), the 11th ranked men’s epee fencer in the world, will be joined in the table of 64 by three of his U.S. teammates on Saturday at the Doha Epee Grand Prix in Qatar.

While Thompson’s top 16 ranking made him exempt from the preliminary rounds, seven of his U.S. teammates began competition on Friday with the pool rounds.

Six of Thompson’s teammates advanced to the first direct elimination table with two-time Olympian Seth Kelsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earning a trip straight from the pools to the table of 64 by virtue of his eighth place finish in the pool rankings.

Athens Olympian Cody Mattern (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned a bye into the preliminary table of 64 where he defeated 2010 Junior World Champion Nikita Glaskov (RUS), 15-14.

Jimmy Moody (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also earned a bye into the preliminary table of 64. In the next round, Moody won his bout against Falk Spautz (GER), 15-9.

Competition will continue on Saturday with the men’s table of 64 as well as preliminary rounds at the women’s world cup event.
