Soren Thompson Wins Bronze at Vito Noto Intercontinental Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – In a warm-up to the World Cup circuit opener in Legnano, Italy next weekend, 2011 Pan American Champion Soren Thompson (New York City, N.Y.) won bronze at the Vito Noto Intercontinental Cup in Naples, Italy on Saturday.

The invitational event featured seven of the best epee fencers in the world, including Paolo Pizzo (ITA), the reigning World Champion, and Geza Imre (HUN), the #3-ranked fencer in the world.

Thompson opened with a 15-14 win over 2011 Asian Championships silver medalist Elmir Alimzhanov (KAZ) in the quarter-finals to advance to the semifinal against 2008 Olympic Champion Matteo Tagliariol (ITA) who was coming off a 15-12 victory over 2011 European Champion Joerg Fiedler (GER).

Thompson kept the bout against Tagliariol low-scoring and the two were tied at eight touches each at the end of the third regulation period.

Tagliariol scored first in overtime to win the bout, 9-8. He went on to lose in the final to Imre, 15-14, who defeated Pizzo in the semifinals by one touch (15-14) as well.
