(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Seventeen-year-old Aleina Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed in the top eight of a junior international event for the first time at the Bratislava Junior Epee World Cup in Slovakia on Sunday.

After finishing the pools with a 3-3 record, Edwards was seeded 79th. Despite her low seed, Edwards earned a bye into the table of 128.

Edwards defeated Evelin Zsargo (HUN), 15-12, in her first bout and won her next bout against 2010 Hungarian Senior World Team member Dorina Budai, 15-14.

In the table of 32, Edwards defeated Eugenia Falqui (ITA), 15-12, to advance to the table of 16 where she would fence U.S. teammate Katharine Holmes (Washington, D.C.)

Edwards won the bout against the 2009 Cadet World silver medalist, 15-9, but lost her quarter-final to 2011 Cadet World medalist Alberta Santuccio (ITA), 14-5, and finished eighth.

Holmes ended the day in 11th – her fourth top-16 Junior World Cup finish of the year.

Competing in his first Junior World Cup, 19-year-old Dylan Nollner (Ogden, Utah) advanced to the table of 32 and finished 22nd. Seventeen-year-old Justin Wan (North Hills, N.Y.) also entered his first Junior World Cup and placed 30th overall.
