USA Fencing National Championships Kicks Off in Reno on Friday

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The largest fencing tournament in the world will begin on Friday as the USA Fencing National Championships and North American Cup F are held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev. and more than 3,500 fencers vie for gold.

The event includes competition in each of the three weapons (epee, foil and saber) in 89 divisions over 10 days, including individual and team events for athletes as young as 7-years-old and age groups for athletes over 70-years-old.

During the course of the event, both national and North American Cup titles will be awarded.

The USA Fencing National Championship events include the following divisions: Y14, Division IA, Division II, Division III, Veteran Age Groups and Senior Team.

North American Cup events are open to both domestic and international competitors and include the following divisions: Y10, Y12, U19, U16, Veteran Team and U19 Team.

In addition to gold medals being on the line, this tournament is the final qualifying event for the 2011 Veteran World Championships which will be held in Porec, Croatia from Sept. 27 – Oct. 2.

Athletes competing in the U19 and U16 divisions also will receive qualifying points on the national rankings that will count towards selection for the 2012 Junior and Cadet World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Next week, Olympic hopefuls from throughout North and South American will compete in the Pan American Zonal Championships from July 4-9 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Athletes from at least 16 nations will fence in individual and team events in order to earn qualifying points for the 2012 Olympic Games.

All events are free and open to the public.
