U.S. Women’s Foil Team Places Eighth at Shanghai World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA opened the Olympic qualifying season with an eighth-place finish at the Shanghai World Cup on Sunday.

The team of Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.), Nzingha Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) and Ambika Singh (Skillman, N.J.) defeated Canada, 45-28, in the first bout to qualify for the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-finals, Team USA led throughout much of its bout against Poland – the reigning World silver medalists – but lost the bout, 45-39.

Team USA lost its first bout in the 5th – 8th place table to Hungary, 45-31, and then dropped their bout for seventh place to Germany, 45-19, to finish eighth overall.

Competition will continue on Monday when the men compete in the preliminary and pool bouts during the Shanghai Grand Prix.
