It was a gold and silver weekend for US Juniors traveling to World Cups February 5-6.
Nzingha Prescod (18, Brooklyn, N.Y./Westbrook Found.) won the Junior “A” Women’s Foil cup in Lyon, France this weekend, which jumps her to the #3 spot in the Junior World Cup standings.
Prescod advanced through the table of 64 with convincing victories. No opponent earned more than 6 touches against her until she met her US teammate Ambika Singh (18, Skillman, N.J./Tiger Z Fencing) in the quarterfinals, defeating her 15-13. She then took down Francesca Palumbo of France 15-6 in the semis, and beat Camilla Mancini of Italy 15-6 to earn the gold.
James Kaull (19, Washington, D.C./DCFC) came away from Sweden with a silver medal this weekend from the Junior “A” Men’s Epee World Cup there.
Kaull tore through the table of 64, landing in the quarterfinals through a 15-12 defeat of Lorenzo Locci of Italy. He beat Jack Hudson of Great Britain 15-11 to advance to the semis, and Ido Herpe of Israel 15-10 to get to the gold medal match. There, he lost to Andrea Vallosio of Italy 14-5.
Also in Goteborg, Anna VanBrummen (16, Houston, Texas/Alliance Fencing) had an excellent 6th-place finish in the Junior “A” Women’s Epee event there. Finally, Jeremy Goldstein (18, Westport, Conn./Fenc. Acad. Westchester/Penn State) placed sixth at a Junior “A” Men’s Foil cup in Madrid.
