Fifth for Imboden and Lu
The long junior season continued with fifth place finishes for two young American fencers at Junior “A” World Cups in Austria and Croatia this weekend.
Race Imboden (17, Brooklyn, N.Y./Empire United) placed fifth at the Wappen Von Mödling Cup in Modling, Austria. Imboden lost his quarterfinal match 15-10 to the eventual gold medallist, Alex Tofalides of Great Britain. Imboden is now ranked seventh in the Junior Men’s Foil World Cup standings.
And in Zagreb, Croatia, Margaret Lu (16, Greenwich, Conn./Empire United) also placed fifth at a very strong Junior “A” Foil competition. Lu reached the quarterfinals with a 15-7 upset of 6th-seed Stefania Straniero of Italy before falling 15-6 to Alice Volpi of Italy, who went on to win the gold and is now ranked first in the world. Lu herself now ranks fifth on the Junior World Cup standings, just behind fourth-ranked Lee Kiefer (16, Lexington, Ky./Bluegrass Fencers).
