Spicer Emge Wins Junior Foil World Cup Silver in Moedling

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Competing at just his second Junior World Cup ever, 16-year-old Spicer Emge (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the silver medal at the Moedling Junior Men’s Foil World Cup in Austria on Saturday.

Seeded 10th after the pools, Emge earned a first round bye into the table of 64 where he defeated Sergio Lacasta (ESP), 15-7.

The win moved Emge into the table of 32 along with teammates Michael Woo (Wayne, N.J.), Turner Caldwell (San Francisco, Calif.) and Jerry Chang (Mountain View, Calif.)

Emge won his next bout against Filippo Guerra (ITA), 15-10, to earn a spot in the table of 16 where he would compete against Woo who defeated Cedric Nkene (FRA), 15-8.

Chang and Caldwell were eliminated in the table of 32 and finished the day in 26th and 31st place, respectively.

In the table of 16, Emge won his bout against Woo, 15-10. Woo placed 10th overall – his third top-16 finish at a Junior World Cup this season.

Emge’s next two wins each came with 15-14 scores against Germans Georg Doerr and Andre Sanita, the fifth-ranked junior foil fencer in the world.

Fencing for gold, Emge faced Alexander Choupenitch (CZE), the top-ranked junior foil fencer in the world and a 2011 Cadet World medalist.

Choupenitch outscored Emge, 15-5, to win gold – his fourth Junior World Cup medal of the season.
