It was a gold, silver and bronze for US Cadets competing at a huge European Cadet Circuit event this weekend in Budapest, Hungary.

Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.) won the Cadet Women’s Foil event on Sunday, while Jerry Chang (Mountain View, Calif.) won silver and Nobou Bravo-Nobui (San Francisco, Calif.) bronze in the Men’s Foil on Saturday.

Lu, who was the top seed going into the competition, was actually upset in the tableaux of 32 by Germany’s Jessica Kinzel (10-9). Lu had to earn her way through grueling repechage tables back to the table of eight. Her last bout to reach the eight was unfortunately against US teammate Sara Taffel (New York, N.Y.), whom she defeated by the score of 15-7.

In the quarterfinals, Lu beat Hungary’s Szonja Szalai 15-9, and then Karen Weis of Germany 15-6 in the semifinals. For the gold, Lu beat Poland’s Natalia Golebiowska 15-7.

Two more US teammates, Nicole McKee (Valley Stream, Ny.) and Jennifer Yamin (Allendale, N.J.), also reached the top eight, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.

In the Cadet Men’s Foil event the previous day, Chang earned the silver in a huge field of 166 cadets, teammate Bravo-Nobui won bronze, and two more US cadets reached the final eight.

Chang, seeded 13th going into the table of 128, wound through the tableaux meeting teammate after teammate. His first bout was against a German fencer (Finke), but his next three bouts in a row, and in the semifinals as well, his opponents were all US teammates.

In part, that is because so many US cadets excelled at the competition. In the semifinals, his opponent was Bravo-Nobui, whom he defeated 15-6. Bravo-Nobui had just knocked out Michael Woo (Morristown, N.J.) 15-8.

In the final, Chang finally met his match in Alexander Choupenitch of the Czech Republic, who won the bout 15-5. The fourth cadet to reach the top eight was Adam Mathieu, who lost his quarterfinal bout to Choupenitch 15-1.
