James Adams, Kazimieras Campe and Ray Sexton continued the U.S. medal streak in style at the 2010 World Veterans Fencing Championships in Porec, Croatia today. Adams (Rockville, Md.) captured the silver, Campe (Edgewater, Md.) bronze in the Men’s 70 and Over Epee event and Sexton (Round Rock, Texas) won the silver in the Men’s 60-69 Saber. This brings the US total for the competition to nine.
As some of the US’s strongest events, notably the 50-59 Women’s Saber, remain to be fenced, the team stands a good chance of surpassing last year’s total of ten medals.
In stroke of bad luck, in the Men’s 60-69 Saber event, Sexton and US teammate Wang Yung (Bellevue, Wash.) met in the quarterfinals and Sexton carried the bout 10-6. Sexton went on to defeat Fabrizio Filippi of Italy 10-7 in the semis and then lost the gold medal match to Richard Bonehill of Great Britain 10-4. Yung finished fifth.
In the Men’s 70+ Epee, US teammates Adams and Kampe also collided, but not until the semifinals. Adams narrowly won the bout 4-3 to advance to the gold-medal match. There, he lost to Peter Bucher of Switzerland 10-4.
In the Women’s 70+ Foil, Janet Cooksey of Great Britain continued her winning ways, adding a gold to the bronze won yesterday in the Women’s 70+ Saber and the gold she earned on Sept. 30 in the Women’s 70+ epee. Una Jackson (Hilton Head, S.C.) was the highest US finisher, at 13th.
