Don Anthony Jr. did Team USA proud on the second day of World Veterans Championships in Croatia, earning a silver medal in the Men’s 50-59 Saber competition. Josh Runyan and Garik Gutman were right behind him, both turning in top-eight finishes in the event.
Anthony went into the elimination rounds seeded ninth and turned in a trio of upsets on his way to the final. He defeated 8th seed Marin Ivanov of Bulgaria and then top seed Eric Loiseau of France 10-5 ibn the quarterfinals. There, he downed Enrico Antinoro of Italy 10-8 before finally being defeated by Vittorio Carrara of Italy 10-5.
In the day’s other events, Jan Patterson went into the elimination rounds of the Men’s 60-69 Foil seeded first, but then fell in a tough bout to the eventual silver medallist Daizo Kawaguchi of Japan 10-7.
Madelon Rosenfeld finished in the top eight of the Women’s 60-69 Foil competition, falling to the gold medallist, Kerstin Palm of Sweden, 10-1 in the quarterfinals.
The US team did not field an entrant in the 70+ women’s epee event, which was won by Janet Cooksey of Great Britain.
