USA Fencing is pleased to announce its team to the World Veteran Fencing Championships, to take place in Porec, Croatia, September 29 – October 3, 2010.
The World Veteran Fencing Championships continues to grow rapidly. This year more than 600 competitors from 30 countries will compete in all six weapons in the different age categories. Men’s and women’s , épée, foil and saber events are to be held in three age categories: 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older.
Fifty-five of those competitors will be Americans and many are veterans in more ways than one, having participated in multiple championships and earning World Veteran Championship medals in the past. Last year’s team alone claimed 10 medals, including six won by team members who return this year.
Walter Dragonetti will return to defend his 2009 epee crown, for example. Anne-Marie Walters, Delia Turner and Eileen O’Leary will all look to convert their 2009 silver medals into gold. Atilio Tass and Ray Sexton hope to better their saber bronzes.
The Veteran Age Team standings are calculated as the best two of three national tournaments: the NAC age-specific Veterans tournaments in December and March, and the Veterans Age Championship at the Summer National Championships. The first World Veteran's Fencing Championships took place in 1998. The Championships are held by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, the international fencing federation.
The US team’s roster is below. The schedule, and the competition's website, can be found at http://www.fencingveterans2010.com/en/ . Stay tuned for results from the exciting competition.
