Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis of the United States and three-time Olympic gold medalist Valentina Vezzali of Italy will join other top-ranked fencers from over 20 countries from June 18 to June 20, 2010, when New York City and the Fencers Club of New York, along with the US Fencing Association, host a Fencing World Cup at The Marriott New York at the Brooklyn Bridge (located at 333 Adams St, Brooklyn NY). This is the first time the Fencing World Cup has been held in New York City since 2004.

Athletes will compete in men’s saber, women’s saber, and women’s foil in one of the last international events before the World Championships in Paris, from November 4 through November 13.

Commentators Keeth Smart and his sister Erinn, silver medalists respectively in saber and foil at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will offer on-going analysis of the competitors’ strategies, and techniques as well as assessment of the bouts. Both were members of the US Fencing delegation to the 2008 Beijing Olympics that Sports Illustrated named the "Brainiest Team."

Fencing is often called "physical chess" for its emphasis on quick thinking. Winning a match requires changing strategies in the blink of an eye.

Many of the competitors will be available to the media for interviews and photographs.

The Fencers Club of New York is a nonprofit organization founded in 1883. The club has a long history of developing talented international-level athletes while also providing a number of fencing- and academic- related community service programs throughout the city. The Fencers Club has sent its athletes to some of the best colleges and universities in the country, and fencing has a particularly distinguished and successful record in the New York community. The six Beijing medalists from New York were all fencers.
