The U.S. Junior men’s foil fencing team concludes the 2010 Junior andCadet World Championships with a gold-medal performance, which were contestedat the Haydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan. The UnitedStates won eight medals during the April 2-10 event, which is highlighted by threegold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals. The United States finishedthird in the overall standings for the Junior World Championships, immediatelybehind Russia and Hungary, respectively.

 

The Americans opened the competition with a 45-32 victory over Polandand a 45-35 win over Hungary. In the semifinals, the U.S. squad dominatedGermany by a 45-28 score. For the gold-medal against Italy, the highlydecorated U.S. team dominated Italy 45-35.

 

The men’s team was highlighted by 2008 Olympian and 2010 Junior Worldsilver medalist Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco), 2010 Cadet World championmedalist Alexander Massialas (San Francisco), 2010 Junior World bronzemedalist David Willette (Lafayette, Calif.), and Zain Shaito (Garland,Texas).

 

Closing out the competition was the U.S. Junior women’s sabre team witha 10th-place finish, after a heartbreaking loss in the opening round to Spain,45-44. The team was comprised of Nicole Glon (College Station, Pa.), CelinaMerza (Wayne, N.J.), Lian Osier (Battle Ground, Wash.), SamanthaRoberts (Upper Saddle River, N.J.).

 

The 2010 Junior and Cadet World Championships were organized by theAzerbaijan Fencing Federation and the Azerbaijan Olympic Committee.
