Alexander Massialas and Race Imboden Finish First and Third at 2010 Cadet Fencing World Championships in Men's Foil

The American fencing team claimed a pair of medals Sunday at the 2010 Cadet World Championships in men's foil. Leading the charge was 2009 Cadet World silver medalist Alexander Massialas (San Francisco) with gold and Race Imboden's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bronze. The Junior and Cadet World Championships are being held at the Haydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan, April 2-10.

Massialas, who is coached by his father Greg, dominated the preliminaries with three victories that consisted of 15-5, 15-6 and 15-8 decisions en route to the World title. He beat Alasdair Dunham of Australia, Daniel Sajo of Hungary and Alex Tofalides of Great Britain.

Massialas defeated Denmark's Alexander Tsoronis, 15-11, in the quarterfinals. Up next for the American was Russia's Kirill Lichagin in a close duel. Massialas out touched the Russian 15-14 to advance to the gold-medal match. In the championship, Massialas narrowly edged Edoardo Luperi, 15-13. Massialas, who will next compete in the Junior World Championships in men's foil on April 7, also qualified for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Imboden opened the Cadet men's foil competition in dominating fashion with a 15-0 shutout victory over Mexico's Jesus Beltran, and continued into the second round by knocking off Australia's Christopher Nagle, 15-1. Imboden edged Korea's Hyun Kwang Lee by a 15-12 score to advance to the quarterfinals, where he out touched Hungary's Antal Gyorgyi, 15-2.

In the semi-finals, Edoardo Luperi of Italy stopped Imboden 15-12, and he finished with his first Cadet World Championship bronze medal. 

Brian Kaneshige (Maplewood, N.Y.) finished 44th after losing a close contest to France's Maxime Pauty, 15-12, which was the American's first Cadet World Championship.

The Team USA women's sabre also took to the strip today and was led by a trio of first-time participants. Skyla Powers (Decatur, Ga.) led the squad with a 14th-place finish that included a 15-14 decision over Hungary's Kata Verhelyi. In the next bout, Powers was dropped by Yana Egorian of Russia, 15-5.

Celina Merza (Wayne, N.J.) and Sarah Pak (Roslyn, N.Y.) finished 18th and 48th, respectively. With Merza's placement, she also qualified for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Team USA will start the junior-aged portion of the Cadet and Junior World Championships on Monday. Team USA won an astonishing 11 medals at the 2009 event. After three days of competition at the 2010 Worlds, Team USA garners two golds and one bronze. The 2010 Junior and Cadet World Championships are organized this year by the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation and the Azerbaijan Olympic Committee.
