Kentucky's Lee Kiefer Golden at 2010 Cadet World Championships

Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) returned to her second Cadet World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, and is the first U.S. foil fencer to medal at this year's event. Kiefer, the 2009 Cadet World silver medalist in women's foil, defeated Italy's Camilla Mancini in the finals, 15-5, to claim her first individual world title.

Along the way, Kiefer dominated the field by out touching her opponents 75-29 collectively. Kiefer, who will also compete in the Junior World Championships later this week, started Saturday with a 15-6 decision over Marika Chrzangwska of Poland, 15-6, and Natalia Golebiowska, 15-5. In the third round, Kiefer defeated her teammate Mona Shaito (Garland, Texas), 15-5, to advance to the semi-final round. Kiefer was brilliant in the semi-finals with a 15-8 decision over Dora Lupkovics of Hungary.

Shaito, who finished 7th, opened up the event with a victory over Italy's Francesca Palumbo, 15-12 and Slovakia's Michala Cellerova, 15-9, before falling to her comrade, Kiefer.

Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.) finished 16th in the 2010 World Championships in women's epee, who won her first bout against Korea's Dukha Choi, 15-10. China's Lianlian Wang stopped Lu in the second round with a 15-9 score.

The Junior and Cadet World Championships are being held at the Haydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex in Baku, which has hosted numerous Olympic caliber sporting events. The cadet competitions will conclude on April 4, and the junior-aged fencers will compete from April 5-10.

Katharine Holmes (Washington D.C.) opened up the 2010 World Championships on April 2 with a fifth-place finish in Cadet women's epee, where she defeated Kamila Strug of Poland, 15-12, and Germany's Julie Morawietz, 15-11, who knocked off Team USA's Ashley Severson (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), 15-14, in the opening round of competition.

Holmes lost to eventual women's epee World Champion Alberta Santuccio of Italy, 15-5. Also competing for the United States was Isabella Barna (Bend, Ore.), who finished 41st.

The Cadet men's sabre team was led by a pair of two-time Cadet World Championships participants - Will Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.) and Alex Ryjik (Alexandria, Va.), who finished 9th and 13th respectively. Eugene Chung (Olney, Md.) finished a respectable 18th in his first Cadet World Championships.

The Cadet men's epee team took the fencing strip on April 3. Leading the way for Team USA was Alexander Eldeib (Burke, Va.) with a 10-place finish. Eldieb picked up victories in the first two rounds against Philip Marsh of Great Britain, 15-14, and China's Qi Sun, 15-13. Eldeib was defeated by Roman Svichkar of Ukraine, 15-13.

Andrew Meyers (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Ayyub Ibrahim (Bronx, N.Y.) rounded out the second day of competition in Cadet men's epee with top 65 performances.

Last year, Team USA won an astonishing 11 medals, and appears poised to challenge for medal honors once again. The 2010 Junior and Cadet World Championships are organized this year by the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation and the Azerbaijan Olympic Committee.
